Laser Welding Technology

Laser beam welding is a technique used to join metals through the use of a laser beam surrounded by an inert shielding gas.

The beam provides a concentrated heat source, allowing for narrow, deep welds and high welding rates. The process is frequently used for light duty, high volume applications, such as those found in the medical industry.

The advantage of laser beam welding vs electron beam welding is that no vacuum is required. Therefore, this eliminates the need for a vacuum chamber, a pumping system and the time necessary to evacuate the chamber. The advantage of electron beam welding is that it typically offers a superior (and deeper) quality of weld with the added benefit of no oxidization.

Applications:

Laser beam welding is a versatile process but is particularly suitable for joining stainless steels and titanium.
